Definitions for SubscriptionMonitor feature terms, metrics, and Stripe billing signals.

Use this glossary as a reference for the terms used across SubscriptionMonitor’s Dashboard, Retention, Account Explorer, Forecasting, and Alerts features.

TermDefinition
MRRMonthly Recurring Revenue. The normalized monthly value of active subscriptions. Annual plans are divided by 12, and other billing intervals are converted to a monthly equivalent.
Normalized MRRMRR converted to a common monthly basis across billing intervals and, where applicable, the workspace base currency.
CMRRCommitted Monthly Recurring Revenue. MRR adjusted for known future changes such as subscriptions set to cancel at period end or scheduled downgrades.
ARRAnnual Recurring Revenue. MRR multiplied by 12.
ARPAAverage Recurring Revenue per Account. Total MRR divided by active paying accounts.
NRRNet Revenue Retention. The percentage of opening MRR from existing accounts retained at period end after expansion, contraction, and churn. Values above 100% mean expansion outweighed losses.
GRRGross Revenue Retention. The percentage of opening MRR retained after contraction and churn, excluding expansion. GRR is capped at 100%.
MRR growth rateThe percentage change in MRR over a reporting period, commonly month over month or year over year.
Net New MRRNet MRR movement in a period: New MRR plus Expansion MRR plus Reactivation MRR minus Contraction MRR and Churned MRR.
New MRRMRR from first-time paying accounts in the reporting period.
Expansion MRRAdditional MRR from existing accounts that upgraded, added subscription items, increased quantity, or moved to a higher priced plan.
Contraction MRRMRR lost from existing accounts that downgraded, removed subscription items, reduced quantity, or moved to a lower priced plan.
Churned MRRMRR lost when accounts cancel or otherwise leave active paid subscription status.
Reactivation MRRMRR recovered when a previously churned account becomes active and paying again.
Delinquent revenueMRR attached to subscriptions or invoices in failed payment states such as past_due or unpaid.
Revenue concentrationThe share of total MRR represented by the largest accounts, such as the top 10 accounts.
MRR band / ARR bandA filter range that groups accounts by recurring revenue size.
Base currencyThe reporting currency used when SubscriptionMonitor normalizes revenue from multiple Stripe currencies.

Customer churn rateThe percentage of paying accounts lost in a reporting period.
Revenue churn rateThe percentage of opening MRR lost to cancellations and contraction in a reporting period.
Opening MRRThe MRR from a set of accounts at the start of a reporting period, used as the denominator for retention and churn calculations.
CohortA group of accounts that share a starting event, usually the month their first Stripe subscription was created.
Revenue cohort retentionThe percentage of a cohort’s original recurring revenue that remains after 1, 3, 6, 12, or more months.
Customer cohort retentionThe percentage of accounts in a cohort that remain active after a given number of months.
Trial conversion rateThe percentage of accounts that move from Stripe trialing status to active paid status.
Renewal-at-riskAn account with a Stripe signal that could threaten future revenue, such as cancel_at_period_end, failed renewal payment, scheduled downgrade, or a high-value renewal coming soon.
Renewal exposureThe amount of ARR or MRR tied to upcoming renewals that may need attention.
Recently churned accountAn account that cancelled or left active paid subscription status in the current or recent reporting period.
Win-back outreachFollow-up with churned or at-risk accounts to recover revenue or prevent cancellation.
TenureHow long an account has been active as a paying subscriber.
Delinquency statusWhether an account has failed payments, unpaid invoices, or other billing collection issues.

MRR forecastA forward projection of MRR over future windows such as 3, 6, or 12 months.
Cohort-based projectionA forecast that uses observed revenue retention from existing cohorts to estimate future revenue.
Renewal WallA view of upcoming renewals weighted by ARR, useful for spotting concentrated renewal risk.
Scenario modelingAdjusting assumptions such as churn, contraction, or expansion to compare upside and downside revenue outcomes.
Baseline forecastThe default projection based on current subscription trends and observed historical data.
Billing intervalHow often a subscription is billed, such as monthly, quarterly, or annually.
Billing cycle anchorStripe’s timestamp that determines when a subscription’s billing period renews.
Subscription scheduleA Stripe object that defines planned future subscription changes, such as upgrades, downgrades, or phase changes.
Proration eventA Stripe billing adjustment created when a subscription changes mid-cycle.
Quantity-driven pricingPricing where subscription revenue depends on billed quantity, such as seats, licenses, or units.
Licensed quantityThe billed quantity attached to a subscription item, often representing seats or licenses.
Quantity expansionAn increase in billed quantity for an existing account.
Quantity contractionA decrease in billed quantity for an existing account.
Quantity lens / quantity layerA supporting Dashboard or Forecasting view that shows whether revenue movement came from billed quantity changes, price changes, or both.
Billed quantity bandA filter range that groups accounts by the number of billed units, seats, or licenses.
TermDefinition
Alert thresholdA configured value that determines when an alert fires, such as a churn percentage or minimum MRR loss.
Churn spikeAn alert condition where customer churn rate or churned MRR exceeds the configured threshold.
MRR contraction alertAn alert condition where net MRR movement goes negative or contraction exceeds the configured threshold.
Payment failure clusterAn alert condition where more than a configured percentage of subscriptions have failed payments within a selected window.
Large renewal approachingAn alert condition for a high-value annual renewal coming within a selected time window.
Licensed quantity dropAn alert condition where a top account materially reduces billed quantity.
Weekly digestA scheduled email summary of current MRR, net new MRR, churned MRR, top expansions, top contractions, upcoming renewals, and fired alert rules.
CSV exportA downloadable comma-separated file containing the currently filtered view from Dashboard, Retention, Account Explorer, or Forecasting.
